The Harlem Renaissance was a period of intellectual and cultural renewal for African American music, dance, art, fashion, literature, drama, politics, and scholarship that occurred between the 1920s and 1930s and was centered in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. In honour of the 1925 anthology The New Negro by Alain Locke, it was dubbed the "New Negro Movement" at the time.
African American culture experienced what is known as a "golden age" during the roughly 1910s–mid 1930s, which is reflected in literature, music, theatre, and visual arts.
The Great Migration of African American workers fleeing the racist conditions of the Jim Crow Deep South—Harlem being the final destination of the majority of those who migrated north—along with the new African American cultural expressions spread throughout urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest of the United States—were all part of this movement.
