Since the 17th century CE, when ancient Greek art was rediscovered and valued, Roman art has experienced something of a reputational crisis.
The appreciation of Roman art, which had soared along with all things Roman in the medieval and Renaissance periods, started to decline when art experts also realized that many of the best Roman works were in fact copies of older and frequently lost Greek originals, or at least inspired by them.
In more recent times, Roman art has been reevaluated and its significance to western art, in general, has been more fully acknowledged thanks to a larger and more balanced perspective on Roman art made possible by archaeology's achievements.
