Why does rigor mortis occur following death?
- The body does not make ATP after death.
- The muscles of the body contract immediately after death in the same way they do when the individual is alive.
- Muscle cells lack oxygen and cannot efficiently use aerobic respiration to make ATP. Anaerobic respiration continues initially, but eventually the muscle cells run out of ATP and cannot pump calcium ions back out of the muscle cell or release myosin and actin filaments from their contracted condition.
- As a whole, actin and myosin bind together and prevent the muscle from relaxing.
