The first Frankish king to unify all of the Frankish tribes under a single monarch, Clovis made sure that the throne was passed down to his descendants and transformed the system of government from one of the numerous petty kings to one of a single monarch. The Merovingian dynasty, which ruled the Frankish kingdom for the following two centuries, is thought to have been founded by him.
As "the first king of what would become France," Clovis is significant in French history. The fact that Clovis converted to Catholicism in 496, largely at the urging of his wife Clotilde, gives him additional significance. Due to Clovis' acceptance of Catholicism (as opposed to the Arianism of the majority of other Germanic tribes), the Frankish people underwent widespread conversion, resulting in the religious unity of what is now modern-day France.
