Arachnoid mater spinal meninges is composed of collagen fibers arranged in an irregular pattern that is very strong.

What is collagen fibers?

Collagen fibers are structural components present in vertebrate tissues that transfer stresses while also storing and dissipating energy. Collagen fibers have a hierarchical structure that comprises collagen molecules, microfibrils, fibrils, fibers, and fascicles that restrict the deformation of tendon and other load bearing tissues. Collagen fibers are comprised of collagen protein and are white in color. The fibers are unbranched and often seen in bundles. Elastic fibers are yellow in color and are composed of the protein elastin. The fibers are found singly and are branched. Type I collagen produces fibers and is present in most connective tissues, with the highest quantities of type I collagen found in bone, ligaments, tendons, and skin. Type II collagen fibers are less well structured than type I collagen fibers. They are found mainly in cartilage.
