The idea that one's actions won't result in rewarding reinforcement that is already there in the environment and, thus, outside of one's control, is known as external locus of control. The incidence of reinforcement is said to depend on uncontrollable elements like luck, chance, or randomness.
For instance, students with an internal locus of control would attribute bad marks to a lack of study habits, whereas students with an external locus of control might place the responsibility for their performance on an unfair instructor or examination.
People who build an internal Centre of control believe they are responsible for their own success. Those who believe in an external locus of control believe that other elements, including chance, determine their outcomes.
