A neuron is made up of three major components: dendrites, an axon, and a cell body or soma (see figure below), which may be compared to the branches, roots, and trunk of a tree.

Despite the fact that there are billions of neurons and numerous variants, neurons may be divided into three main classes based on their function:

sensory neurons (long dendrites and short axons), motor neurons (short dendrites and long axons), and relay neurons (short dendrites and short or long axons).

There are three kinds of neurons:
