Interneurons, as their name suggests, are the intermediary cells that link spinal motor and sensory neurons. Interneurons can exchange impulses with one another as well as with sensory and motor neurons, producing circuits of varying degrees of complexity. They share the same multipolarity as motor neurons.
The neurotransmitters GABA or glycine are predominantly used by inhibitory CNS interneurons. However, the CNS also contains interneurons that release neuromodulators like acetylcholine as well as excitatory interneurons that need glutamate.
