The hepatic portal system is part of the vertebrate blood circulation system where nutrients from the digestive tract are absorbed and then enter the blood through the capillaries in the liver before being carried to the heart. The portal vein is responsible for carrying blood containing nutrients from the digestive system, substances that are absorbed in the small intestine are first brought to the liver for processing before being passed on to the heart. If blood flow to the liver is obstructed, the blood pressure in the portal vein will increase and this can be bad.

Insulin is a hormone that helps the absorption of glucose in the body's cells to control blood sugar levels. Insulin lowers blood levels of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids and promotes storage and will promote absorption of these materials by cells. This hormone will affect the transport of nutrients in the blood by changing the activity of enzymes that play a role in certain metabolic pathways. As with blood flowing through the hepatic portal system, insulin will carry glucose to the liver. Insulin will trigger the process of forming glycogen from glucose through the process of glycogenesis in the liver.
