Ocean Floor Mapping
At about 48 miles east of Key Biscayne, near Miami, there is a shipwreck near the Bimini Islands. The diagram below shows the time it took for sonar pulses to
travel to the seafloor and back to the ship. This was done at equal distance intervals(about 3 miles) between Key Biscayne, FL and the wreck.
Directions: Use the formula below to construct a data table(fill in below) and graph(next page) of the profile of the ocean floor between Miami and the wreck.
Sound travels at around 1500 m/s (4950 ft/s) in seawater. Formula for depth: D = 1/2 v t, where D is depth, v is velocity(speed of sound in seawater), and tis
time in seconds. Make sure to use the correct units!
