The United States Constitution's Supremacy Clause declares that the federal laws adopted in accordance with the Constitution, and treaties signed in accordance with its authority are the "supreme Law of the Land" and supersede any conflicting state laws. According to its provisions, state constitutions are subservient to the supreme law and state courts are obligated by it. Of particular significance is the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which stipulates that the federal government has only those powers granted to it by the Constitution.
