The sequence of questions on a poll can influence responses. These are called ordering effects.
Which factors can influence the results of a poll?
- The larger and more random or diverse the poll, the more accurate the poll (the less of a sampling error). However, the following factors can influence polls are, their size and diversity, the questions themselves (because they can be biased or unbiased), and the demographic measured.
- The term order effect, refers to the well-documented phenomenon in which different orders in which questions (or response alternatives) are presented can influence respondents' responses in a more or less systematic manner.
- Order effects can be caused by basically anything and so are dangerously difficult to control for. Some of the possible causes are fatigued after one or two tests, and practice (participants become more acquainted with the testing environment).
