Two parents contribute genetic information to produce unique offspring in sexual reproduction. Because sexual and asexual reproduction have advantages and disadvantages, some organisms do both.

Single-celled protists were the first eukaryotes to engage in sex about 2 billion years ago, more than 1.3 billion years before the development of the first animals with neurons capable of assessing pleasure. These bacteria (and their modern counterparts) exchanged genetic information through processes such as conjugation, transformation, and transduction, all of which are classified as parasexual. A bacterium could not possibly experience pleasure.

Under stressful conditions, organisms that reproduce alike sexually and asexually tend to switch to sex. Mathematical models have revealed that it is significantly easier for sex to evolve if more fit individuals reproduce asexually and less fit individual people reproduce sexually. Recombination does not break apart well-adapted genotypes in this way, but poorly adjusted genotypes could be recombined to produce new combinations throughout offspring.
