It thus most prefers to substitute for other polar residues, in particular Glutamate, which differs only in that it contains an oxygen in place of the amino group in Glutamine. It can also substitute with other polar amino acids. Alanine is an neutral non polar amino acid that is used to make proteins. It is used to break down tryptophan and vitamin B-6. It is a source of energy for muscles and the central nervous system. It strengthens the immune system and helps the body use sugars.
