The Central Pacific Railroad was one of the transcontinental railroads where Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as labourers.
They were engaged to assist in the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad in addition to the California gold rush. The majority of immigrants who stayed within the boundaries of the British Empire were the British, who began to dominate in the middle of the 17th century. Most of these early immigrants were farmers—more than 90%. Although immigrants frequently settled close to ports of entry, many more made their way interior.
Many states, particularly those with small populations, made a concerted effort to entice immigrants by promising employment or farmland. Even yet, between the beginning of the California gold rush in 1849 and 1882, when their immigration was prohibited by federal law, a sizable number of Chinese people travelled to the United States. Economic hardship in the 1870s led to competition between Americans and European immigrants for positions that had previously been held by Chinese workers.
