It is important to distinguish between uncommon and abnormal conduct. An abnormal pattern of behavior is not always a sign of a mental or psychological disease. On the other hand, abnormal conduct is frequently a sign of a potential mental and/or psychological problem, even while it is not a mental condition in and of itself. An "ongoing dysfunctional pattern of thinking, emotion, and behavior that causes considerable discomfort and is deemed aberrant in that person's culture or society" is the definition of a psychiatric disorder. As it pertains to psychiatric illnesses, abnormal conduct would be "ongoing" and a source of "substantial suffering." A patient with a medical ailment is said to have a mental problem if the doctor determines from the diagnostic that the patient is acting abnormally.
