In the event of a collision, you should take the path of least resistance.
What to do after a collision
- Keep calm
- Turn on the hazard lights
- Check for injuries to yourself or other passengers; call 911 if someone is hurt
- If the accident is minor, move the vehicle to a safe place away from traffic; set up cones or traffic signs if necessary
- Call the police, even if the accident is minor
- If involved in a multi-car accident, share the following information with the other driver involved:
- Name
- Address
- Phone number(s)
- License number
- Insurance company name & policy number
- Take photos of vehicle damage and any associated road conditions (eg tire tread marks, traffic signs, etc.)
- Keep any evidence on hand; get an eyewitness report of the accident, along with their contact information and permission for your attorney or insurance agent to contact you.
- Call your insurance company as soon as possible
What NOT to do after a collision
DO NOT:
- Attempt to move any injured person; wait for medical personnel to arrive to prevent further injury or injury
- Leave the scene of the accident; this is a crime
- Discuss liability
- Sign any documents other than the police report
- Accept an offer to pay from the other driver instead of going through the appropriate insurance procedures. If you are not at fault, your driving record will not be expunged, and you will not have to pay the deductible during the repair process.
- Have your car repaired without first notifying your insurance company; such performance may not be guaranteed.
