When a reaction is formed, it is commonly believed that the rejected impulse does not go away but rather stays with the person in some unconscious, primal form. Therefore, in cases when love is felt as a reaction creation in response to hatred, we cannot argue that love is exchanged for hate, as the original aggressive sentiments persist beneath the caring veneer that only hides the hate to disguise it from awareness.

Stockholm syndrome is the psychological reaction of a hostage or kidnaps victim who "falls in love" with the person who has total control over them despite their dread and hatred of that person.
