Montag may see the Hound follow him by peering into people's TV dens through their home windows. The TV chase is being watched by practically everyone. When the Hound approaches Faber's home, Montag notices it pause before moving on.
On his Seashell radio, Montag can hear a message instructing everyone to stand up and peek out their windows and doors to see him on the count of ten as he continues to dash toward the river. Just as the presenter counts to ten and all of the doors in the neighborhood begin to open, he arrives at the river. He swims into the water and floats away with the tide in order to prevent the Hound from detecting his scent. He eludes the police helicopters' searchlights before observing them turn and take off. He washes up on a rural shore. He is overcome by the views, noises, and scents of nature as soon as he steps out of the river. He locates the rail line and proceeds to follow it. He can clearly feel that Clarisse had walked there as well as he does.
