Corals can get their nutrition from algae and thus survive in nutritionally depleted water. Corals can accumulate calcium carbonate from algae.
Corals and algae have a symbiotic relationship. The coral offers the algae with a safe environment as well as the compounds they require for photosynthesis. It differs from the other two major types (barrier reefs and atolls) in that it either has a completely superficial backreef zone (lagoon) or none at all.
Most reef-building corals have photosynthetic cells in their tissues called zooxanthellae. These special cells and corals have a symbiotic association. The coral allocates the zooxanthellae with a safe environment as well as the compounds they require for photosynthesis.
