Nora came to the realization that she had been loved all of her life, but only for the character she played. She has served as a toy—a doll—for her father and for Torvald.

Torvald declares that he will start treating Nora and the kids more like students than playthings and acknowledges that some of Nora's remarks may be true. Nora declines his offer, claiming that neither she nor the kids can learn from Torvald. She insists on leaving Torvald because, in her words, she must educate herself. He prevents her from leaving, but she responds by telling him that she has made the decision to stop depending on him and that he cannot control what she does.

He then tries to convince Nora to stay so that she can carry out her "holy obligations" to her husband and her kids, but Nora argues that she also has a duty to herself that is just as essential.

Nora discovers she hasn't really been content in Torvald's dollhouse and has only only been there to perform. She has tricked herself into believing she is happier than she actually is.
