The function is (linear, or nonlinear). The function is positive where x (<, or >) (a number) and negative where x (<, or >) (a number). The function is increasing (at no time, or at all reals). The function is decreasing (at no time, or at all reals). There (is, or isn't) an extrema. As the x-value (increases, or decreases) the y-value (increases, or decreases).
