Why was Maine NOT an original state?

It belonged to Massachusetts.

It was part of Canadian territory.

It was jointly controlled by the U.S. and Britain.

It was included with New Hampshire.

Maine had a settlement that was concurrent with Virginia. But, was sparcely populated, so the Massachusetts’ people claimed it as their own.

I would pick the first option.
I'm from New Hampshire, and am pretty familiar with this sort of history!
