The student is using a web diagram to narrow down a general topic by listing possible subtopics.

A web diagram illustrates the relationship between objects and can help narrow down a topic. The student would put the general topic in the center of the web diagram.  Subtopics could be listed around the general topic and futher details could be listed around each subtopic.
