You are going to bake cookies for the school bake sale and you are not sure if you and your friends have enough sugar. You need 2 cups of sugar. Each friend has 1/10 cup, 3/2 cup, 1/8 cup. Which is not enough. What if someone found an extra 1/3 cup? Then do you have enough?
1/10 wouldn't work because it isn't close to a whole. 1/8 wouldn't work because it isn't close to a whole either. But if the 3/2 found 1/3 cup of sugar that will equal to 2 since 3/2 + 1/3 = 4/2 = 2.
