This theme of mistaken identity is what in the end makes a comedy funny, especially when it comes to Shakespeare's ingenuous comedies.

Shakespeare often used mistaken identity as a device in his comedies (A). Shakespeare actualized it by creating two similar characters.

EXPLANATION

Shakespeare frequently used mistaken identity as a device in his comedies like on “Twelfth Night” and “Comedy of Errors”. Both of those plays use twin characters whose character is misidentified (use) by another character (one or more). Plautine comedies became the source of play in Shakespeare writings of both comedies. Moreover, due to the use of the twin's misidentified identity in the plot, readers can understand that Shakespeare used his previous comedy “Comedy of Errors” as a source of play for “Twelfth Night”.

The most difference in both of those plays is that the twins in “Twelfth Night” are not completely alike since the characters are a girl and a boy. With “Twelfth Night” Shakespeare took the basic play concept deeper than he previously has done in “Comedy of Errors” since a twin girl is not the same to be mistaken for the twin brother. This happens only because of the girl has chosen to differentiate herself into a man. Anyway, identical twins or not, their mirroring is also used as a tool in the plot, just like in “Comedy of Errors”.
