Respuesta :
So a oxygen atom has a certain amount of electrons. If it gains any electrons more than it has now. Then it will become a negatively charged oxygen atom.
In order to become negatively charged an oxygen atom will gain electrons from the outside.
What is oxidation state?
Oxidation state of any atom gives idea about the number of exchangeable electron from the outermost shell of the atom.
When a neutral atom accepts electron from the outside on the outermost shell of the atom as a result of which negative charge is obtained on the neutral atom.
When an oxygen atom gain two electrons from the outside then they bear negative charge on itself as:
O + 2e⁻ → O²⁻
Hence, oxygen must gain electrons from outside to become negatively charged.
