Groundwater leaking above the Earth's surface when the water table is close to the surface is called a spring.
A spring is part of the hydrosphere and a place where groundwater emerges from the ground. Springs form when the saturated zone under the water table (aquifer) is filled to the point that the ground water leaks and overflows to the earth’s surface. A spring may flow occasionally or throughout the whole year.
