Further Explanation:

Written by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese is a graphic novel that was released in the year 2006 and qualifies as Young People’s Literature. In this book, the writer weaves three stories of a Monkey King, Jin Wang or Danny, and Chin-Kee together. Danny or Jin is someone who moved to America and finds himself to be a misfit. He is constantly bullied at school and outside. He desperately wants to fit into the idea of being an American and does all the things to be so. It very vividly speaks about the life of an Asian-American adolescent. He becomes a part of the basketball team at his school, Oliphant High. However, Chin-Kee who is brought into the story as his cousin is a stereotypical Chinese. He sings loudly, speaks loudly, he speaks in bad English, and even flirts with the girl that Danny likes. He tries to outdo Danny in every field in the school. Chin-Kee actually reminds Danny, the now blonde boy of his real Chinese self and his insecurities of being so. His fantasy of remaining white and acceptable makes a huge commentary of the racist ideas that are prevalent regarding Chinese. Further, Chin-Kee’s actions have a purpose that makes the reader cringe with his Chinese-ness and realizes our own stereotypical ideas. In a very clever manner, the writer blends that American and the Chinese culture together.

One of the most common stereotyping is that of Chinese food. In order to embarrass Danny and to make people cringe, Chin-Kee eats a cat gizzard for lunch. Despite, being a Chinese himself, the now white Danny cringes and gets embarrassed by his cousin. This definitely reminds Danny and the others of the dangerousness of being an Asian and makes the people around him turn against him. Chin-kee’s behavior is so deliberate that the reader feels like he is trying to make the people around him hate him for what he is.
