"regular, free elections" is the best option in terms of something that limits the power of the US government, since if elected officials become tyrannical, they can simply be removed during the next election cycle.
The United States is a Republic State because its Constitution limits the power of the government giving the people a series of rights that cannot be changed by the government. The US is a representative democracy which people elect individuals that represent them at the government.
