How did the United States gain territory that would become California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and parts of other western states?

During the Mexican-American War(1846-1848) the US had an invading Army and Navy, so after the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty was signed that ceded the whole states of California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and some parts of other western states.
