Blood and iron was a name given to a speech Otto von Bismarck gave on 1862 when he was the Minister President of Prussia about the unification of the German territories. That speech was given by him under request of the King Wilhelm I after the Prussian House of Representatives refused the approval of an increase in military spending.
Wilhelm I appointed Bismarck as Minister President and Foreign Minister and on Septemeber 30 he appeared before the House´s Budget Committee and underlined the necessity for military preparedness to solve the German Question. This was a debate over the best way to unificate the German Confederation after revolutions on 1848.
The term Blood and Iron was used by Bismarck to make a point on the use of armed force to achieve the unification, he argued that speeches and majority decisions would not be the answer to the unification on the contrary the resolution would be with iron and blood.

"Prussia must concentrate and maintain its power for the favorable moment which has already slipped by several times.
