HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

CLASS IX

Story Writing

A story writing is a work of “fiction or imagination” that is usually written in “easily understandable grammatical structure” with a “natural flow of speech”. Story writing is meant to be read at a single sitting and therefore it should be as direct and brief as possible.

Typically story writing has five key elements – Character (fewer is better), Setting (brief but poetic and vivid), Plot (as simple and interesting as possible), Conflict (intense but one), and Theme (relating to the majority of readers).

As story writing involves creative writing skills, please follow the below-mentioned points to write a good story –

1. The narrative should be in Ist or IInd or IIIrd person.

2. The setting of the story should be made.

3. Time, location, context, and atmosphere should be described to create imagery.

4. Meaningful dialogues to be used. Dialogues should have expressions.

5. Characterization – identify 2 – 3 main characters and a few side characters in the story.

6. The plot of the story should be interesting but short because the word limit should not be exceeded.

1.Write a short story in 100 – 120 words, with the help of the cues given below. Give a suitable title to the story.

Going to Mumbai by train to attend the marriage of a friend ….. got stuck in a traffic jam ….. reached the railway station late ….. boarded a wrong train ….. realised after two hours ….. now you … … …

2.Write a short story in 100 – 120 words, with the help of the cues given below. Give a suitable title to the story.

Satish was standing on the balcony watching the last rays of the Sun. Loud and angry voices in the street below distracted his attention. He ran down the stairs to see what had happened … … …

DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH

Description of People is a biographical sketch of their lives from birth to the present time, highlighting major events and achievements during that span. In short it entails a person’s characteristics and events related to his life and their effects on his life.

1.You love your father very much, for he is an ideal father. Describe him in your own words in 100-150 words.

2.One day you were commuting in a DTC bus. Unfortunately, your wallet was left at home. The conductor gave you the ticket for free. You are moved by his gesture. Describe him in 100-150 words.

DIARY ENTRY

Diary writing is one of the most personal and informal categories of writing. A diary writing can be based on an experience, a scene, a description or narration of certain event or any other thing or activity that the writer considers worth writing in his personal diary.

In the examination, the question on diary writing is aimed to test your imaginative, creative and expressive skills.

A diary entry has no fixed format or style of writing. However, a good diary entry does contain the following features:

1. A good diary writing contains the place, the date, the day and even the time of writing. For example:

Agra

20th July, 20XX

Friday, 8:00 p.m.

2. A diary doesn’t need any formal heading. However, it is optional. If you want, you can give a suitable heading.

3. The style and tone is generally informal and personal. However, it depends on the subject. Sometimes the tone can be philosophical and reflective too. You can freely express your viewpoints and feelings.

4. As the diary is writer’s personal document, the diary entry doesn’t need any signature. It is totally optional.

5. You can evolve your own suitable style depending on the topic of your writing.
