An application where scientific notation is useful comes with long distances. Astronomers use scientific notation to demonstrate the sheer complex distances between a satellite and its orbital distance around the Earth or its relative distance to the moon.

Scientific notation have also been seen as far more accurate and much more elegant than to write the full expanded form. This allows more accurate measures, such as the number of decimal places, to be placed in accordance to its place, and thus, it creates a much more precise measure of data.
