These were the problems with the Articles of Confederation:
- There was no chief executive. This caused a lack of federal power.
- It took 9 out of the 13 states to pass any law. This made it extremely difficult to pass any laws.
- Likewise, it took all 13 states in order to pass an amendment. This also made change difficult.
- Congress wasn't given the power to tax citizens. This meant the government couldn't pay off its debt.
- Likewise, Congress also couldn't collect state debts owed to the federal government.
- Congress didn't have the power to draft an army. While Congress could declare war, it couldn't draft an army, so there wouldn't be an army when one was needed.
- There was no national court system. This meant state disputes could not be resolved.
- Also, Congress didn't have the power to settle state disputes at all.
There were so many problems with the Articles of Confederation, that's why it was eventually discarded and replaced by the Constitution we have today.
Hope this helps!
