During the War of 1812, Britain blockaded U.S. ports and prohibited them from receiving imported goods. So Americans began buying more of their goods from American manufacturers. As these manufacturers made more money, they put more of their profits into expanding their businesses. Also, President Thomas Jefferson recognized that America had to become more self-sufficient and not depend on so many imported goods if America was to be strong. Thus, the government began supporting the expansion of American manufacturing.
