Further Explanation:
Esophagus commonly called food pipe is a fibro-muscular tube which connects the lower extremity of pharynx with the stomach. It corresponds to 6th cervical vertebra and 11th thoracic vertebra which is 25 to 28 cm long and 2 cm in diameter in adult human. Esophagus is composed of four layers mucosa (stratified squamous epithelium), sub-mucosa (connective tissue), muscularis propia (muscle fiber) and adventitia.
Esophagus is one of the component of the digestive system starting from the back of the mouth around 5 cm of the esophagus is in the neck and it run back of the mediastinum behind the trachea and lower part of the esophagus lies behind the heart and in front of spine, through the diaphragm, just before entering the cardia of stomach.
Esophagus is surrounded by two muscular rings which divide it into two sphincters,
- Upper esophageal sphincter
- Lower esophageal sphincter
Upper esophageal sphincter lies at the top of the esophagus which is under conscious control which keeps the food and secretion going down the, windpipe whereas lower esophageal sphincter lies at the point where it meets the stomach, it is not the voluntary muscle and it prevent the acid and stomach content move backward.
