In fractional crystallization, what makes this disadvantageous is that multiple runs are needed in the process. This is to purify the mixture adequately but this still does not reach that 100% purity. In addition to the disadvantage of this, some of the mixture is lost during the process. This is because of so many steps being done. Hope this helps.
Low yield as a lot of the substance that is being purified is lost due to the several steps involved. Fractional crystallization is a cascade process as it involves the purification of the substance to the highest degree of purity. Also fractional crystallization is ineffective in separating enantiomorphs which have identical physical property.
