Immigration is the entry into a country or region of people who were born or come from another place. It represents one of the two options or alternatives of the term migration, which is applied to the movements of people from one place to another and these displacements entail a change of temporary or permanent residence. The two options for such migratory movements are: emigration, which is the departure of people from a particular country, region or place to go to another place and immigration, which is the entry into a country, region or place from other parts of the world.
