This is actually based from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”. And based on this excerpt, what the narrator is doing in this moment is that he is was reminiscing of what had happened in the past. Hope this answers your question.

He was lost in his own thinking while examining the House, but it quickly became just him and his imagination while he was losing objectivity while starting at the big house which he judged both incredible and scary since he could feel some sort of peculiar atmosphere that seemed to cause some unease to the narrator.
