Charlemagne was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards and Holy Roman Emperor. An accomplished statesman and ruler, he is most prominent in history for having been the first emperor in Western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. His state was the Carolingian Empire.

Charlemagne was also vital in uniting Europe and initiating the Carolingian Renaissance within the Church.
