A panther, by some accident, fell into a pit in a forest. Several shepherds discovered him. Some of the shepherds threw sticks at him and pelted him with stones. Others, moved with compassion, threw some food to the panther to prolong his life. At night they returned home, not dreaming of any danger. They thought that tomorrow they would find the panther dead in the pit. The panther, however, rested and recovered his strength. Then he freed himself with a sudden leap from the pit, and returned quickly to his den. The next day he raged with anger. He attacked the shepherds in their homes. The shepherds were frightened, and offered him their flocks in exchange for sparing their lives. The panther responded: “I remember those who threw stones at me and those who gave me food. Those who were kind shouldn’t fear. I return as an enemy only to those who hurt me.”
