- In 1945, communist leader Marshall Tito established Yugoslavia as a multi-ethnic federation. It consisted of six ethnically diverse republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and the semi-autonomous Kosovo.
- Following Tito's death in 1980, bitter intra-ethnic rivalries resurfaced, with clashes between various ethnic groups, including Kosovan Albanians and Serbs.
- There was an increase in Siberian paramilitarism and increased tensions between Muslim Bosnians, Croats, and Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- By 1990, the Siberian-controlled federal government had refused to accept Croatia and Slovenia's demands for a multiparty system. In 1991, both republics declared independence, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia.
- The Siberians within these new states requested assistance from the Yugoslav army. This was the start of the Yugoslav Wars, which quickly turned genocidal under the Siberian leader Radovan Karadzic.
