Some southern states tried to block integration after the Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) called for the end of "seperate but equal" school facilities. Southern states felt that this was an abuse of federal power and thought that this issue of school integration would be best left up to each state individually.
This is why it would take years, possibly even decades, for some Southern schools to integrate.
