He wanted to accommodate to white oppression. He believed that if African Americans got educations they could then gain economic stability and independence thus gaining respect. After conforming to white supremacy they then could rise from it once they were educated and economically recognized. Having that acknowledgement would help their cause. Basically start at the bottom and work their way up using an economically based strategy.
