Juan and Alex are both saving money for college. Juan saves $150 per month and currently has $2000 in the bank. Alex saves $250 per month and has only $1000 in the bank. Not counting the interest they will earn, how many months will it take until both boys have saved the same amount of money?
• Let m represent the # of months it takes Juan and Alex to save the same amount of money
• Let A represent the amount of money they will have after m months.

a. Write an equation for the amount of money Juan will have after m months.

b. Write an equation for the amount of money Alex will have after m months.

c. Solve the two equations to determine the number on months it will take them to save the same amount of money. Your solution will be (m,A).

Respuesta :

We could use a linear equation and just substitute the numbers given.

Juan: A= 150m+2000

Alex: A= 250m+1000

To find out the same amount of money they will have in a certain amount of months, you will just make both equations equal to each other:

150m+2000=250m+1000
-250m -2000=-250m-2000

**simply adding like terms***

-100m=-1000

m=10

In exactly 10 months, Juan and Alex will have the amount of money saved.

To check your answer you simply plug 10 in for each equation! If they are equal than your answer is right!
