Films and books have been compared and contrasted by people since movies came to be as an entertainment choice. Many say that books have always been better because they motivate imagination and creativity, increase vocabulary and allow the reader to exercise the mind because he/she must recreate what the book is showing, whereas in a film everything is visually given to the viewer. However, when analyzing this issue closely, you can see that this is not always the case. In fact, in recent research it has been seen that books and films do have similarities and both are valuable assets to humanity.
First, both books and films motivate the imagination and creativity. Although it is true that films are visual and this might curtail imagination, the truth is that a well-developed film might reserve certain clues and information, just like in a book, that lead the viewer to have to exercise his/her imagination to understand what is missing or what is being shown.
Second, both can be used as sources of entertainment, instruction, information and education. A book and a film can be used with these purposes and it is not exclusive to one or the other. A book can be informative, educational or entertaining and so can a film.
Third, film has mostly developed from books, meaning that books have become the origins of most films, but some books have also been written from movies that have been produced.
Like these, there are many more similarities between films and books, but we will stay with these for now.
