The Dred Scott vs. Sandford case ruled that slaves are property, not people. This issue regarding the legal status of slaves was brought up after Dred Scott sued from his freedom since he lived with his master in a free territory. The Supreme Court ruled against Scott and ruled that slaves are property. This essentially allowed slavery to exist anywhere in America, even if a state already outlawed the institution.
