Significant figures are defined as the first non-zero number.
For example, 136.
1, 3, and 6 are all non-zero numbers. This means that 136 has 3 significant figures.
However, just because there's a non-zero number, it doesn't mean that those digits aren't the ONLY significant figure. Any numbers with zero's in between them count as significant numbers.
Also, there are things known as "trailing zeros". These are also known as significant numbers if they follow after the decimals.
0.080 has 1 non-zero number and a trailing zero.
0.080 has 2 significant numbers, but 8 is the significant figure.
I hope this helps!
