Before 1800, most peppered moths in England were light-colored. During the Industrial Revolution, soot and industrial wastes darkened tree trunks. Gradually, the light-colored moths became rare, and the dark-colored ones became abundant. What role did natural selection play?

The light colored moths could no longer hide against the darkened trees and were more vulnerable to predators. They were easier to hunt and only the moths with the gene for camofloging lived to reproduce and pass on their genes to offspring.
